What can be indexed?

Almost anything can be indexed, but you need to know why an index will benefit your work. Knowing this helps determine the kind of index you want to have. For example, an index in a cookbook focusing on all the different ways you can use apples will have a very different structure from an index in a military history book focusing on naval warfare. Nevertheless, both types of publications benefit from having an index.
